October 2026 has been a busy month for Google Search. The September spam update finally finished rolling out, and Google announced major changes to how publisher links appear inside AI-generated answers. If you run a blog, here is everything that changed — and what to do about it.
September 2026 Spam Update: Complete After 13+ Days
According to Google’s Search Status Dashboard, the spam update that began on September 24, 2026 completed on October 8, 2026 — a rollout of nearly 14 days, the longest spam update of 2026. (For comparison, the August update took under 3 days.)
Google confirmed the update targeted link spam specifically and ruled it the cause for sites that lost rankings between late September and early October. If your traffic dropped in that window, the likely culprits are the remaining spam policies: hacked content, doorway pages, expired-domain abuse, or scaled content abuse.
Key takeaway: Google also warned this system will run periodic refreshes that can shift rankings without any announcement. And recovery from a spam demotion can take many months — there is no reconsideration request for algorithmic demotions.
AI Overviews Now Show Publisher Links Higher
In the biggest publisher-friendly move yet, Google announced (October 15–17, 2026) that links inside AI Overviews and AI Mode now appear inline and higher on the page, more frequently. Google is also testing an “official source” box above some answers and expanding news carousels worldwide.
Why this matters: studies showed top-ranking pages losing 30% to 79% of clicks when an AI Overview appears, with zero-click searches climbing sharply. Smaller how-to and explainer sites were hit hardest. These changes are Google’s response to publisher pressure — and its News AI licensing pilot now includes 400+ publications.
What Bloggers Should Do Right Now
- Audit for spam-policy risks: remove thin doorway pages, disavow toxic links, and kill any scaled auto-generated content. Our maintenance checklist covers the technical side.
- Become a “preferred source”: Google says Preferred Sources usage grew 7x since early 2026 and now gets highlighted in carousels. Publish original, first-hand content readers would actively choose.
- Write for AI citations: clear headings, direct answers in the first paragraph, and factual depth make your content citable inside AI Overviews — which now link back to you more prominently.
- Diversify traffic: with zero-click searches rising, build email lists and direct audiences. See how to get traffic to a new blog for channels beyond Google.
- Do not chase every swing: a ranking dip during a rollout is not automatically a penalty — competition, intent shifts, and SERP layout changes matter too.
Bottom line: the spam update rewards clean sites and punishes manipulative ones, while the AI search changes finally give publishers a fairer shot at clicks. Keep your content original, your site technically healthy with the right plugins, and your audience diversified.
